Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Abel was a shepherd and Cain was a farmer. When it came time for them to give an offering to the Lord, Abel gave the firstlings or the best of what he had. Cain also gave part of his crop. Some people say he did not give the best part of his garden and that is why God did not accept his offering. Their offerings were similar to our tithings. We are to give to God a tenth of our income. This is to be put aside before we pay bills, buy groceries, etc. By taking ten percent of our money, we are giving Him our best. We are not to give what we want Him to have. Some people give more than ten percent and that is okay. I have also heard that he did not give with a cheerful heart. Mark 12:41-44 says: (41) And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. (42) And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. (43) And He called unto Him His disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: (44) For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. So, we see that it isn’t how much we give but how we feel when we give. As long as we give Him ten percent and we do it with joy, He will accept it. This also is true when we give to others.
