The Battle
Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Bela (Zoar) were under the control of Chedorlaomer King of Elam for 12 years. In the 13th year they decided they wanted independence so they rebelled.
Chedorlaomer requests Amraphel King of Shinar, Arioch King of Ellasar and Tidal King of nations to help him subdue them again. On the way they fought and defeated the Repahims, the Zuzims, the Emins and the Horites. Once they arrived at Elparan they came back up and defeated the Amalekites and the Amorites before moving on to the cities of the plain. We are not told the reason for this. They may have felt they would have a better chance of defeating the rebellious cities if they increased their numbers or these kingdoms might have felt threatened when they saw the huge armies approaching and immediately started wars.
The nine kings and their armies met at the Vale of Siddim (now the Dead Sea). The cities of the plain were brought under control once more and their goods and some of their people were taken, among them was Lot.
Abram was alerted and he took his allies (Mamre the Amorite and his brothers Eschol and Aner) and 318 of his servants and chased them to Dan. After slaughtering and chasing them to Hobah he brought back everything and everyone that was taken.
As reward for his bravery and victory the king of Sodom wants him to take all the material things. Abram refuses because he knows all his victories and wealth come from God and he doesn't want someone else to get any of the credit.
When we give God all the praise and glory for the victories in our lives He will help us overcome our battles even if the enemy is much larger. May our Heavenly Father give you the strength to win your battles each and every day.
