Genealogy Explained
Now we need to go back to the genealogy in chapter 10 and Noah's blessing and cursing in chapter 9. I have posted maps to help you. By comparing the locations of these ancient cities to modern maps you can see who they are descended from.
Chapter 9 verses 25-27- (25) And he said, cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. (26) And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. (27) God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant.
Ham's children settled in Ethiopia, part of an area north of the Persian Gulf (Gen. 10:8-10), Egypt, Libya, and Canaan (modern Israel). All of the cities mentioned in chapter 14 are descendants of Ham except Elam and Guti. Chapter 10 verse 19 - And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.
Shem's children dwelled in Persia (northeast of the Persian Gulf), Assyria (between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers), Babylon (Chaldea), Lydia (Asia Minor and northern Africa), Syria (north and east of Israel). In verse 22 of chapter 10 we learn that Chedorlaomer is a descendant of Shem: The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
Japheth had the largest part. His children lived in modern Italy, Germany, Wales, Russia, Ireland, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Sweden, Finland, northwestern Iran (Medes, Media), Greece, and Cyprus. However, according to the Book of Jubilees, Madai, Japheth's son, married Shem's daughter. He did not want to live beyond the Black Sea with his brethren so he begged Elam, Asshur, and Arphaxad to let him live among them. He became father of the Medes in northwestern Iran on the east of the Zagros Mountains. This fulfills 9:27 regarding Japheth dwelling in the tents of Shem. So, the Gutians are descendants of Japheth. Tablets have been found describing the Gutians as being light colored or fair-skinned so this is further proof that they belong to Japheth.
Genealogy clears up confusion in the Bible, especially referring to wars and why God wanted some of these cultures destroyed and why He did not want the Israelites to marry into them.
